The origins of rice
The history of rice began in ancient times, in South-Eastern Asia, Ancient China, from where it spread to the rest of Asia and the Middle East more than 3,000 years ago. At that time rice was used in its complete state and was already used for food. It started to spread in the Mediterranean area, reaching Spain somewhere in the eighth century, in the midst of the Muslim reign, which explains the current Arabic etymology "al-ruzz". First crops were cultivated in India and China, and after that rice began to be cultivated in the islands of Indonesia and Japan where it was until the XVII century the main currency of exchange. In these areas, rice has a close connection with religion and is considered a sacred plant, and an embodiment of the Dewi Sri goddess. In Asia, rice is the basic food and is consumed two or three times a day. In Romania, rice was used in cooking in the 18 the century, when a group of Italian Milanese cultivated it for the first time in Banat.
